intro

Our volunteers are energetic, committed, and successful individuals, who dedicate their time to helping Minds Matter's students achieve their academic pursuits. Nearly 100 volunteers in Philadelphia dedicate their time to help Minds Matter achieve its mission each year.

Minds Matter volunteers come from diverse career backgrounds including banking, consulting, education, finance, law, marketing, non-profit, and others. The Minds Matter volunteer experience offers dedicated individuals both the opportunity to meet a group of like-minded adults, as well as the opportunity to hold leadership posts and carry the organization to new levels each year.

Instructors

As a Minds Matter Instructor, you will guide students through a structured weekly curriculum that helps elevate students’ academic performance. Our Instructor needs include writing and math skills.
What we expect from our Instructors:

  • Able to attend Saturday sessions from 10:30 to 12:00 for all, or part of, the school year
  • Cultivate and maintain a relationship with your student through mid-week touchpoints
  • Graduate of a four-year university

Mentors

As a mentor, you will be paired with a Minds Matter student and a co-mentor, both of with whom you will meet with weekly at the Minds Matter Saturday sessions throughout the school year. The co-mentor system is designed to provide the student varied and diverse points of view on the world. At sessions, you will assist the students in working on essays, completing summer college program applications, and college/university selection. You will develop and challenge the students through engaged participation in our “What’s Going on in the World” exercise, a weekly current events reading and debate series. You will get to participate in our field trips, college visits, and community service days. What we expect from our Mentors:

  • Able to attend Saturday sessions from noon to 2:30pm during the school year
  • Cultivate and maintain a relationship with your student through mid-week touchpoints
  • Act as a positive influence and a role model
  • Graduate of a four-year university
